Our Faculty

Experienced and enthusiastic instructors encourage and support student success. CICS Northtown has a talented and dedicated faculty team that believes in the hope and promise of educating young people.

It is well known and documented that excellent teachers make a significant difference in the achievement and well being of students. The faculty and staff at CICS Northtown engage in yearlong professional development programs to improve their teaching methods and strategies.

Ms. Anne Matz
Director

Ms. Anne Matz has served as Director of CICS Northtown Academy since July 2009.  She is an experienced educator with more than 21 years of experience. She holds a Master’s of Educational Administration from DePaul University and a Master’s in Pastoral Studies from Loyola University of Chicago.  She also holds a Bachelor of Arts from Carleton College in Minnesota.  Prior to joining the faculty of Northtown Academy, Ms. Matz worked at St. Scholastica Academy in the West Ridge neighborhood of Chicago from 1992 through 2009, serving as the principal for the last six years of her tenure.  She also taught in DePaul University’s Graduate School of Education as an adjunct instructor in the area of curriculum.  

Mr. Andrew Reuland
Associate Director

Mr. Andrew Reuland is entering is second year as Associate Director of CICS Northtown Academy. He is currently working on his doctorate in school administration at Loyola University Chicago and holds a Bachelor degree in Mathematics from the University of Notre Dame, a Masters in Education from Northwestern University, and a Masters in Instructional Leadership from Loyola University Chicago. Prior to working in administration, Mr. Reuland taught mathematics for 10 years in the Chicago area. He has taught classes at St. Rita High School, The Chicago Academy for the Arts, Fenwick High School, Triton College and Northwestern University. He has taught advanced placement courses for seven years and was selected twice to be a reader for the AP exams. His work in graduate school has focused on teaching methods, teacher supervision, and improving assessments. After three years as a St. Rita Mustang and four years as a Fenwick Friar, Mr. Reuland is very excited to call himself a Puma and work with all the people who invest their time and talent into CICS Northtown Academy.

 

 

Nicole Anderson
English Teacher

Nicole Anderson completed her student teaching at CICS Northtown Academy where she currently teaches English.


Aryel Ashe
Special Education Teacher
M.Ed. DePaul University

Aryel Ashe has been teaching since 2004 after earning a B.A. in English Literature from the University of Iowa. Aryel went on to obtain her M.Ed. in Secondary English at DePaul University in Chicago.  After teaching English and Social Science for four years, Ashe returned to school to earn an LBS1 endorsement.  Ashe loves teaching and is thrilled with where her educational choices have led her.  In her spare time, she enjoys playing with her son, exploring “dollar stores” on Lawrence Avenue, going on walks with her family.

Elizabeth Bramley
English Teacher
B.A. Hope College

Elizabeth Bramley is a graduate of Hope College where she double majored in English and Spanish for secondary education. Prior to joining CICS Northtown as an English teacher, she taught at Mather and York high schools. She loves to travel and has studied abroad in Spain. She currently coaches Lacrosse at New Trier High School.

Anne Callaghan
English Teacher
M.Ed. University of Illinois – Chicago

Prior to becoming a teacher, Anne Callaghan spent a decade in corporate America working in the account management and corporate training departments of Sara Lee, MetLife, and United Healthcare. She has been a member of the Northtown staff for three years teaching writing and English. She has three children ranging in age from 14 to two and has been involved in many citywide youth programs as a parent volunteer.

Jill Campbell
Social Worker
M.S. University of Illinois – Chicago  

Jill Campbell is a graduate of University of Northern Colorado where she obtained a B.S. in Psychology. Upon graduation, she spent 3 years driving a 40-foot ski bus thru the slippery slopes of the Breckenridge ski resort and backpacked through Europe with friends. After spending seven years in the advertising industry, Campbell returned to school, earning a Masters of Social Work. She is beginning her fourth year at CICS Northtown Academy and is a huge sports fan, with the Chicago Cubs and Chicago Bears being her favorite teams.

Jason Chau
English Teacher
Ph.D.  University of Chicago

Jason Chau has taught at the high school level for six years and is one of the original faculty members of CICS Northtown Academy.  A native of the San Francisco Bay area, he completed his undergraduate degree at the University of California at Davis, his master’s degree at San Diego State University, and doctoral coursework at the University of Chicago (all in English Literature).  Prior to joining CICS Northtown, Chau taught various english and writing courses at San Diego State and the University of Chicago.  At Northtown, he has served on the Literacy and Writing curriculum teams and coaches boy’s volleyball. He also serves as the advisor to the Science Club and Honor Society.  

Jeanine Cho
Mathematics Teacher
B.A. Mathematics Azusa Pacific University

Jeanine Cho joined CICS Northtown after graduating Azusa Pacific University where she earned a B.A. in Mathematics. She is currently pursuing a M.A. degree in Secondary Education and enjoys mountain biking and the great outdoors.

Aria Choi
English & Writing Teacher
B.A. University of Illinois - Chicago

Aria Choi is a graduate of University of Illinois at Chicago where she earned her B.A. in Teaching of English.  She joined the teaching community at CICS Northtown Academy in 2007, where she also completed her student teaching. In addition to teaching English and writing courses, she also teaches psychology and sociology.  She lives to eat, travel, learn, and experience meaningful encounters with people of differnt cultures, all around the world.

Robert Colville
Special Education Teacher

Robert Colville began his teaching career at Northtown and loves being a part of the school community.  Shortly after receiving his bachelor’s degree from The University of Arizona, he moved to Chicago and worked as a one-on-one aide. Aside from teaching, he is passionate about coaching the boy’s varsity basketball team, fly-fishing, reading, sports, and cooking.

Kathryn Coughlin
Case Manager/Student Services Team Lead
M.A.T SpecEd. National-Louis University

Kathryn Coughlin started teaching special education at CICS Northtown Academy in August of 2005 and became Case Manager/Team Leader of Student Services in August of 2006.  She received her B.A. in Social Work from Marquette University and she moderates the Helping Hands Service Club. She has enjoyed spending spring breaks with students in South Dakota, France/Italy, and Spain. She also enjoys singing and made a guest appearance in the chorus of Northtown’s musical Anything Goes. In her free time she performs with three of her Northtown co-workers in their band “The Groovin’ Louies.”  

Patricia Fahy
English Teacher
B.A. College of Holy Cross

Patricia Fahy graduated from the College of Holy Cross in Worcester, MA, with a B.A. in English Literature and a concentration in creative writing non-fiction. She is a Teach For America alumna and is currently finishing her Master’s in teaching at National-Louis University.  She has worked closely with other CICS Northtown Academy teachers to revise all four years of the writing curriculum at Northtown to better engage students in various modes of writing and improve the quality of student writing overall.  Her interests include running, reading, practicing yoga, and playing tennis.

Jovanna Feldman
Special Education Teacher
M.A. Northeastern Illinois University

Jovanna Feldman has been at Northtown Academy on the Support Services team for three years and worked in and around Chicago for three years prior to coming to Northtown. She completed her undergraduate degree in Sociology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Some of her interests include running, kickboxing, reading, vegetarian cooking, animal rights, and eating local food from farmer’s markets around Chicago.

Ryan Fuller
Social Studies Teacher

Ryan Fuller is a Social Studies teacher at CICS Northtown Academy. He is a graduate of North Park University where he received his B.A. in History. He completed his student teaching at Northtown Academy and is happy to join our full time teaching staff. He and is an avid Chicago Cubs fan and loves spending time with his dog Wrigley.

Jean Goldrich
English Teacher
B.A. University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign

Jean Goldrich has been a Writing/English teacher at CICS Northtown since 2006. Prior to teaching at Northtown, she was a Research Analyst for the GEODE Initiative at Northwestern University, where she helped edit and develop curricular resources and materials for an environmental science curriculum. During her time at CICS Northtown, she has received grants from Donors Choose for the Film Club, moderated the school’s National Honor Society, and contributed to the school’s Sophomore Literacy Team and Writing Curriculum Redevelopment Team.  

Reegan Goldstein

Special Education Teacher

Reegan Goldstein is entering her ninth year of teaching and her fourth year on the Student Services team at Northtown Academy. She completed her undergraduate work at Michigan State University where she earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education. She loves to travel and enjoys spending time with her one-year-old son and with friends and family.  

Heather Gorny
English Teacher
M.A. University of Illinois-Chicago

Heather Gorny completed her undergraduate degree from the University of Illinois - Champaign in May 2002. She returned to school in the spring of 2005 and completed her Master’s in Education. She is excited to bring her love of literature, writing, and politics into Northtown’s classrooms as a social science and writing teacher. When not at Northtown planning lessons for her students or the entire freshmen class, she enjoys reading, spending time with friends and family and the outdoors.

Andrew Granchalek

Andrew Granchalek is a social studies teacher at CICS Northtown Academy and began his teaching career at Warren Young High School. He received his BA in History/Education and is happy to join Northtown Academy as a full time teacher.

Jennifer Gross

Jennifer Gross is a college counselor at CICS Northtown Academy. She is a recipient of the Outstanding Future Educator award from Indiana University – Bloomington where she also received her B.S. in Elementary Education.  She enjoys tennis and cooking.

Scott Gurney

Scott Gurney has taught Mathematics at CICS Northtown Academy for the past 5 years.

Matt Hale
Special Education Teacher

Matt Hale has almost a decade of teaching experience. He has earned a B.A. in Psychology from Washington University and two master's degrees in school leadership and teaching.  For relaxation, he enjoys quality time with his wife and two kids. He also enjoys mixed martial arts and chess.

Brian Harris

Brian Harris has been teaching since 2006 and completed his undergraduate studies at Illinois State University in 1994. In 2004, he enrolled in the graduate program at DePaul University to become a Social Sciences and English teacher. He earned his Special Education endorsement from Roosevelt University.

Jennifer Henricks

Jennifer Henricks began her teaching career at Beaumont High School in the St. Louis Public School District. She received her B.A. in creative writing from DePauw University and her Master of Social Work from Washington University in St. Louis. She enjoys art and writing.

Jane Holper  
Special Education Teacher

Jane Holper has been a special education teacher for eight years, and has been teaching at Northtown Academy for four years. She completed her undergraduate degree in Psychology at Loyola University. During her career, she has worked with students in preschool, elementary, and high school settings, as well as taught special education methods courses at Roosevelt University.  Ms. Holper is proud of the accomplishments of Northtown students, and is dedicated to helping students with disabilities achieve their educational goals.  

Michael Kerns
English Teacher

Michael Kerns has been teaching since 2008 and received his teaching certification from National-Louis University.  His interests include horseback riding, foreign films, Wii golf and long Sundays on the couch watching football.

Jim Klise
Librarian
M.A.University of Missouri-Columbia

Jim Klise has earned degrees from Bennington College, the University of Missouri-Columbia, and the Catholic University of America in Washington, DC.  Before joining CICS Northtown, Klise taught Writing at Columbia College in Chicago, as well as at the University of Missouri. Klise has written book reviews, marketing materials, speeches, press releases, travel brochures, annual reports, print advertising, monthly newsletters, and even short stories. His writing has appeared in the Chicago Sun-Times, Booklist, Story Quarterly, New Orleans Review to name a few. In addition to overseeing the library at Northtown Academy, he advises the Literary Journal, the Book Club, and the Gay-Straight Alliance.

Allie Lewin

Allie Lewin began her teaching career at Glenbrook North High School and has previously worked at Libertyville High School as an English teacher.

Ann Lindstrom
Mathematics Teacher
B.A. University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign

Ann Lindstrom has taught Algebra at Northtown since 2006. Originally, she intended to become a guidance counselor, but after spending time in the classroom as part of the Secondary Education program, she discovered a passion for teaching. After completing her student teaching experience, she returned to school for her Mathematics endorsement. She is currently working on her Masters degree at North Park University and plans to one day earn a doctorate in education.  

Megan Marrs

B.S. University of Illinois Urbana- Champaign

Megan Marrs obtained undergraduate degrees in Molecular Biology and Spanish.  Taking advantage of the opportunities that college presented, she became involved in many volunteering and study abroad opportunities.  While in college she joined Teach For America and has been passionate about teaching and social justice ever since.  When she is not teaching or taking master’s courses at National-Louis University, she enjoys chatting with her grandparents and attempting to cook.

Zoraida Martin

Zoraida Martin graduated from DePaul University in 2005 with a B.A. in Secondary Education and a concentration in History. She enjoys teaching, mentoring, and coaching students of all ages. She will receive her Master's degree in Supervision and Administration from National-Louis University in 2010.

Eileen McBride
Athletic Director

Eileen McBride has been teaching for 21 years and is a founding member of the CICS Northtown Academy staff.  She completed her undergraduate degree at DePaul University and was most recently the Athletic Director and Arts and Wellness department Chairperson at Good Counsel High School.  Her interests include reading, golf, volleyball, softball.

Erin McQuinn

Erin McQuinn received her B.A. in English and Psychology from Marquette University and teaching certification from National Louis University. She began her teaching career at Lincoln-Way North High School in Frankfort IL., and enjoys traveling and trying new restaurants.

Allison Meier

Allison Meier completed her student teaching at CICS Northtown Academy and graduated Summa Cum Laude with a degree in Secondary Education. She is a self-proclaimed expert chef and in her free time, she enjoys rooting for her favorite team, the Chicago White Sox.

Kristin Metzler

Kristin Metzler received her B.A. in English Education, began her teaching career at Joliet West High School. She enjoys vacations, reading, and spending time with friends and family.

Emily Mueller
Spanish Teacher
M.A. DePaul University

Emily Mueller has been teaching Spanish since 2006 and earned her undergraduate degree from the University of Wisconsin in Madison with a double major in Spanish and Theatre.  Prior to joining CICS Northtown Academy, Mueller lived in Mexico where she did administrative and translation work at a Spanish-language school. Her hobbies include reading, cooking, dancing and renovating her new home.

Benjamin Neidich

Benjamin Neidich received his undergraduate degree in history and began his teaching career at South Elgin High School. He is an avid football fan and his favorite teams include the Fighting Illini and the Chicago Bears.

Kate Niedfeldt
English Teacher
B.A. Missouri Southern State University

Kate Niedfeldt is a founding member of the CICS Northtown Academy staff. She completed her undergraduate degrees at Missouri Southern State University with a double major in Mass Communication/Journalism and Theatre. In 2000, she moved to Hawaii and took a job teaching English and Theatre while she worked on her teaching certificate at the University of Hawaii-Manoa. After several years in the sun, she missed her Midwestern roots, and got a job at Northtown just as it was opening.  She is currently in a graduate degree program at Northeastern Illinois University. Her hobbies include theatre, playing volleyball, and traveling.

Zachary Novick
Social Studies Teacher
B.A. Millikin University

Zachary Novick prides himself on being a consummate Northsider and is a proud product of Chicago neighborhoods and public schools. He has worked at Northtown since 2004 and currently teaches sophomore World History, Senior Western Civilization, and Law. As a hobby, Novick plays drums in a few rock bands, hangs out on the beach, and ponders the nature of existence, relationships, and communication.

Jane O’Halloren

Jane O’Halloren began her professional career as an editor in educational publishing. After realizing that she would rather interact with people than sit in a cubicle, she became a teacher. As an English teacher at CICS Northtown, O'Halloren holds degrees in both English and French and enjoys the time she spends interacting with students, her colleagues and parents. In her free time, she likes to read, cook, run, bike, and swim.

Drew O’Malley is a physical education teacher at CICS Northtown Academy.

Mario Ortiz
College Counselor
M.A. University of Wisconsin-Madison

Mario Ortiz joined CICS Northtown Academy its inaugural year as the school's college counselor. Prior to joining CICS Northotwn, Ortiz worked as a college admission counselor and had a successful career as a newspaper and magazine journalist and editor. He began his career after completing a journalism degree at Boston University. He is currently completing a second graduate degree in school counseling. Ortiz enjoys helping teens make the jump to young adulthood, navigate the world of college, and start purposeful lives. In his free time, he enjoys South American travels, running, cooking with his wife and riding his Ducati motorcycle.   

Amy Owen
English Resource Teacher
B.A. University of Wisconsin – Madison

Amy Owen works as an English Resource teacher at CICS Northtown Academy and is a graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Madison where she earned a B.A. in Communications and English. Upon graduation from college, Owen joined AmeriCorps and worked on the development and design team for Milwaukee Renaissance Academy, where she later became the Program Director. When not in the classroom, Owen can be found camping, or at music concert.

Jamie Parlor

Jamie Parlor is a graduate of Northwestern University where she completed her M.A. in English. She joined CICS Northtown Academy after serving for two years in an English Ph.D. program at Northwestern University. Parlor completed her student teaching at Northtown and is passionate about reading, languages and food.

Brian Peterson
English Teacher
B.A. Western Illinois University

Brian Peterson earned his B.A. in English Education from Western Illinois University and prior to joining CICS Northtown Academy, taught for Bennett Community Schools and Moline High School. Peterson published his first book “The Burning Fight: The Nineties Hardcore Revolution in Ethics, Politics, Spirit, and Sound” in 2009. In his spare time, Peterson continues to work on fiction and non-fiction books, features, and short stories.

Timothy Poulemanos

Timothy Poulemanos joined Civitas Schools as a charter Northtown Academy faculty member in 2003 following his teaching experience working with students in a therapeutic day/alternative school setting at the Jewish Children’s Bureau, Chicago and Cyd Lash Academy, Special Education District of Lake County.  Timothy graduated Summa Cum Laude from the Board of Governor’s program at NEIU following careers in banking and health care.  Mr. “P.” coached girls’ tennis 4 years and currently moderates the Bowling and Greek clubs at Northtown Academy.  His hobbies include bowling, tennis, hiking, and traveling.

Cindy Rico
Spanish Teacher
B.A. University of Indianapolis

Cindy Rico was born and raised in Chicago and describes herself as a true Chicagoan. In addition to teaching Native Spanish at Northtown, she will be teaching French I beginning the 2009-2010 school year. On summers where she is not traveling, she enjoys attending baseball games at Wrigley Field.  She has been a Cubs fan since she was five, and in 2007 adopted a 7-week-old lab collie mix whom she named Wrigley.  

Dawn Riggins

Dawn Riggins is CICS Northtown Academy’s English as a Second Language teacher. She has a B.A. in English and an M.S. in Education from the University of Dayton. She has been teaching high school for eight years. She is also studying for an M.A. in Linguistics at Northeastern Illinois University.

Nicole Rousakis

Nicole Rousakis is a graduate of Illinois State University where she earned her B.A. in English/Secondary Education. Upon graduation from college, she worked as a T.A. at CICS Northtown and completed her student teaching at Fenton High School in Bensenville Illinois. In her free time, she likes to travel, run and play with her dog.

Kevin Ryan
Dean of Students
B.A. Northeastern Illinois University

Kevin Ryan has been in education for over 30 years and joined Northtown Academy in its inaugural year as the Dean of Students. He is a graduate of Saint Patrick’s High School and Northeastern Illinois University with a degree in history and education.  Mr. Ryan and his wife Mary, who is also an educator, have lived in Niles for 25 years with their 4 children.

Mark Stasiorowski
Social Studies Teacher
M.A. National-Louis University

Mark Stasiorowski earned his Master’s degree in teaching from National-Louis University and his B.A. in History from DePaul University. While working on his undergraduate degree, he worked at a record store where he purchased and now owns more than 1500 CD’s.

Jamie Steel
Assistant Dean
M.A.T. University of Illinois - Chicago

Jamie Steel came to CICS Northtown Academy after teaching for three years in Boulder, Colorado.  He was a World History teacher at Northtown for three years and has spent the past two as Assistant Dean. In this capacity, he runs tutoring programs for struggling freshmen and a leadership program for upperclassmen, in addition to helping with operations and discipline.  His interests include the bass guitar, golf, baseball, and travel.  He currently is working on his second master’s degree and Type 75 Certificate at Northeastern Illinois University.

Angeliki Stolis

Angeliki Stolis is a graduate of Northeastern Illinois University where she completed her M.A. in Reading. While at Northeastern, she was a member of the Academic Honors Society. She is an avid reader who loves to travel.

Patrick Strybel
Science Teacher

Patrick Strybel earned his a B.S. degree from Indiana University in Biology, Chemistry and Psychology.  He started his teaching career in Philadelphia where he taught middle school, before coming to Chicago.  He is currently taking M.A. classes at National-Louis University. He enjoys coaching the boy’s varsity baseball team and, when not at school, working on cars and participating in autocrosses.

Kathleen Sweet
Mathematics Teacher
B.A. Otterbein College

Kathleen Sweet completed her undergraduate studies in Mathematics at Otterbein College in Westerville, Ohio. She is currently attending graduate school at National Louis University. She has successfully completed a project with Donors Choose and hopes to complete more in the future. Outside of school, Ms. Sweet enjoys seeing a good musical, exploring the city, and baking.

Ursula Swiergula
Mathematics Teacher
B.A. DePaul University

Ursula Swiergula found a home at Northtown Academy on her first day of student teaching 4 years ago. Throughout her time at Northtown, she has been teaching Algebra 1, Algebra 2, and Pre – Calculus 1. Other than her love for teaching and watching her students grow into amazing and successful young adults, she enjoys traveling, scrapbooking, bike riding, rollerblading, cooking, and spending time with her friends and family.

Kristen Thomas
Mathematics Department Team Lead

Kristen Thomas is a Chicago native that has been teaching Math at Northtown since its doors opened in 2003. She is in the process of completing her Master’s degree in Mathematics at Northeastern Illinois University.  Ms. Thomas feels fortunate to be able to share her hobbies with her students, such as volunteering, softball, camping, traveling, skiing, and volleyball, through school activities and trips.    

Jeanette Thompson
Art Teacher

Jeanette Thompson has spent the last six years in Chicago creating and teaching Art at Northtown Academy. Before moving to Chicago, she taught for five years at a public middle school in Brooklyn, NY.  She holds a B.A.in Scenography from the State University of New York at New Paltz. Every spring she works with students to create new and interesting sets and costume designs for the Spring Musical, by incorporating those projects into her Art classes.

Andres Tovar
Special Education Teacher

Andres Tovar has just completed his 12th year of teaching.  He finished his undergraduate studies at Illinois State University in 1995 and promptly began teaching at Elgin H.S. After two years, he set out to fulfill a dream of travel and adventure that lasted nearly a year.  His travels began with a 5-month road-trip around the Western U.S., then 2 months in Guatemala studying Spanish, and finishing with 4 months bouncing around the Greek Islands and Turkey. When not working, Mr. Tovar can be found riding his motorcycle, spending time with friends and family, and checking out live music.  

Jamie Troiano

Jamie Troiano, an Evans’ Scholarship recipient, is a graduate of the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, where he earned Bachelors degrees in Secondary History Education and Economics. Prior to joining Northtown Academy, he worked at John Hersey High School as a Special Education Inclusion Assistant.

Kaitlin Wagner
Science Teacher
B.A. Boston College

Kaitlin Wager is excited to work in her third year at CICS Northtown.  She is currently working on her Masters in Teaching at National-Louis University.  She has had experience teaching Biology in the L.A. Unified School District, as well as life skills and job coaching at a Boston school for children with multiple, intensive special needs.  Ms. Wagner is the assistant girl’s soccer coach for Northtown, and loves nature, being outside, music, reading, running, and of course, the Red Sox!

Christopher Wakefield
