Frequently Asked Questions

What are charter schools?
Charter schools are public schools operated by independent organizations. They are public in every sense by being open to all students; non-selective in enrollment; non-religious; tuition-free; and, often designed specifically to educate a substantial proportion of underserved students.

Do I have to pay tuition?
No, charter schools are public schools. A nominal student fee is assessed annually that covers costs associated with field trips, textbooks, and school events. You will also be expected to pay for your uniform. Finally, if you choose to participate in extra-curricular activities such as sports, additional fees may be assessed.

Why is there a lottery system for admission?
Illinois charter law requires that we utilize a lottery in the admissions process. CICS is not permitted to look at a student's attendance, discipline, grades or test scores before acceptance is determined.

How long is the school day and school year?
Classes begin at 8:00 a.m. and end at 3:30 p.m., except on Wednesdays when students are dismissed at 2:00 pm. Students attend school for 195 days each year. The school day and year are longer than most Chicago schools because we believe it takes this much time to properly prepare students for high school and college.

Does CICS have a uniform policy?
Yes, our school has a uniform policy. Students attending CICS Northtown wear uniforms consisting of a white oxford shirt, navy sweater, navy pants, dress shoes and ties for boys. We believe that a uniform sets the tone of professionalism required for success at CICS Northtown.

What is the discipline code?
Students attending CICS adhere to a strict code of conduct. Expectations for student conduct, attendance and academic achievement are high. For more information on the school's discipline code, please refer to the student handbook.

My son or daughter is an average student. Will he/she succeed at CICS?
Yes, if he or she is willing to expend the effort necessary to succeed. High expectations are set for all students at CICS Northtown. It is also important to understand that academics come before extra-curriculars.
